Deckset 03: Musketeer Official Guide Top Banner

Introduction

The Musketeers are a classic archetype in Vanguard, with its beginnings all the way back in Booster Pack Vol 08: Blue Storm Armada! With blooming fauna as part of their regal attire, these elegant soldiers fiercely protect Neo Nectar with their swords and muskets! The deck focused primarily on maintaining a strong board presence by retiring their own units to superior call Musketeers from the top of the deck, thus allowing them to exchange weaker units for stronger ones. In the process of doing so, this playstyle also thinned the deck to increase the odds of revealing triggers during trigger checks.

Over time, this archetype has received a variety of support in the form of Legions and Strides! In their reintroduction in the V series, they maintained their aforementioned playstyle, whilst incorporating the new Plant token mechanic to further supplement their board! Over time, the introduction of the unique “Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia “Яeverse”” was the initial trigger for Musketeers to be a potential deck in Premium. With a vanguard reride mechanic, innate multi-attack, Force marker generation and synergy with the existing Musketeer card pool, Cecilia “Яeverse” remains as the combo piece that ties the whole deck together.

Now, the Musketeer archetype will blossom again with the release of the Musketeer Premium Deckset: an updated Stride with a new crest! The early game of the deck flows well with the superior Stride upon your grade 3 ride up turn! On the other hand, the combos with Cecilia “Яeverse” remains at the center of the deck. This informative guide will showcase the deck’s prowess, allowing you to better play with or against them!

Grade 3s

White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia, Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia “Яeverse” and Rotting Usurp Dragon

The original “White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia” blooms again in this Musketeer deck! Its Limit Break Ability returns five normal Musketeer units in drop to your deck to call two copies of Cecilia from deck to the field! It also can retire a Musketeer ally to call another Musketeer from the top five cards of your deck to the field! With the crest generated by “Maiden Lily Musketeer Captain, Virginal Cecilia”, the full potential of these abilities can be maximized!

“Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia “Яeverse”” is the main combo enabler of the deck! When attacking, it retires two rear-guards to call two unit cards from the top five cards of your deck! Additionally, after your Cecilia rear-guard that was called from deck this turn attacked, if Cecilia “Яeverse” is your vanguard or a front row ally, it Counter-Blasts 1 and locks two other rear-guards to Stand the Cecilia that attacked! If you have a locked card in your front row, that Cecilia is bound and rode instead! With multiple copies of Cecilia “Яeverse” called from deck during your combo turn, you can use their abilities repeatedly to create many vanguard and rear-guard attacks!

A versatile rear-guard in this suggested deck is “Rotting Usurp Dragon”, as it calls itself from drop when your grade 3 or greater vanguard is placed! This card calls itself back to the field when Cecilia “Яeverse”’s reride ability is used, generating another attack. Make sure to put some Force markers on its circle to ensure it hits numbers! It can also recall itself after being discarded as a Stride fodder, allowing you to build board and maintain card advantage!

Grade 2s

Lycoris Musketeer, Saul, Pansy Musketeer, Sylvia, Peony Musketeer, Toure and Cyclamen Musketeer, Favila

The grade 2 Musketeer lineup consists of some powerful Neo Nectar cards! When placed, “Lycoris Musketeer, Saul” Soul-Blasts 1 and retires an ally to call a unit card from the top three cards of your deck to the field! If a trigger unit was called, it activates all of that card’s trigger effects! Saul’s ability to optimize your board with better allies and create additional pressure through trigger effects is highly valued in the deck.

Next up is “Pansy Musketeer, Sylvia”, which calls a Plant token for free when placed! While simple, the called Plant token can be used as a retire target for your other Musketeer abilities, or be empowered by “Untainted Holy Damsel, Green Katrina” and “Storm Element, Cycloned” to enhance your offensive push! There’s also “Peony Musketeer, Toure”,which when placed, retires another rear-guard to look at the top three cards of your deck, either calling two Musketeers or one card from among them to the field!

The aforementioned three cards have tremendous presence in the early game, so don’t be afraid to drop them onto the board early to create instant offensive pressure!

Last but not least, there’s “Cyclamen Musketeer, Favila” to be considered if you can find copies! When another Musketeer ally is called, Favila gives a Musketeer ally on your board and itself additional Power and Resist! This is especially useful in protecting your Cecilia “Яeverse” when called from deck, ensuring that your combo can go off without a hitch!

Grade 1s

Maiden of Sweet Berry and Water Lily Musketeer, Ruth

Aside from Rotting Usurp, we’re running “Maiden of Sweet Berry” as one of the other non-Musketeer cards in your normal unit lineup! Like Sylvia, it calls a Plant token when placed, and Soul-Charges 1 if your vanguard is grade 3 or greater! This card’s also a great booster, gaining Power if your vanguard is grade 3 or greater!

We’re also running “Water Lily Musketeer, Ruth”! When ridden, it calls a Plant token to the field; if your opponent’s vanguard is grade 1 or greater, Ruth calls two instead! On top of this, when Ruth or another unit is called from deck, it retires itself to Counter-Charge 1! With much-needed resource generation and setup for early game aggression, Ruth is an important part of the Musketeer deck.

Triggers

Maiden of Blossom Rain

A shortcoming of this deck is the inability to completely guarantee the grade 3 ride up of original Cecilia due to the lack of consistency tools in the Musketeer archetype. As such, the draw power of Draw Perfect Guards can come in handy to mitigate this issue.

G Zone

Maiden Lily Musketeer Captain, Virginal Cecilia, White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia (Crest), Untainted Holy Damsel, Green Katrina and Storm Element, Cycloned

The white lily blossoms brilliantly again with the updated “Maiden Lily Musketeer Captain, Virginal Cecilia”! If your vanguard is the original Cecilia, and you did not generate Imaginary Gifts this fight, Virginal Cecilia can be Stride during the main phase! Then, you can turn a Musketeer card in your G zone face up to get two Force markers and the crest for “White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia”!

This crest sets the base Power of your vanguard with the Limit Break ability to 13 000, and allows for Limit Break abilities to be activated even when your damage count is three or less! Additionally, if your heart is “White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia” with Limit Break, Virginal Cecilia inherits all of your heart’s original abilities, and gains this ability: when your “White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia” is called from deck, you draw a card and that unit gains +10 000 Power! Together with Cecilia’s Limit Break, you’ll draw two cards immediately and have a strong front row to work with!

Let’s not forget about Virginal Cecilia’s second ability: you retire up to five of your rear-guards, before calling any number of Musketeer allies to the number of units retired by this effect from the top seven cards of your deck! They also gain Power scaling with the number of face up Musketeer cards in your G zone! With a strong early game going first, this board reset and field buff will allow you to continue to up the ante against your opponent!

As the premier Stride option for Neo Nectar, “Untainted Holy Damsel, Green Katrina” works wonders in the Musketeer deck! When placed, it turns a card in your G zone face up to call Plant tokens to the field according to the number of your face up cards in your G zone, and gains the CONT ability to empower all Plant tokens! When attacking, it calls any number of cards from deck according to your Plant token count, setting up other attacks and Cecilia “Яeverse”’s ability condition! With the card’s huge offensive capabilities, you can consider Striding Green Katrina going second as opposed to the superior Stride play!

“Storm Element, Cycloned” has remained a staple in Neo Nectar ever since its inception due to its ability to continuously empower units without any abilities while remaining in the G zone – in essence, Cycloned strengthens your Plant tokens to allow for stronger attacking columns!

Sacred Tree Dragon, Rain Breath Dragon, Flower Princess of Dedication, Robertina and Bond Protector Musketeer, Antero

Neo Nectar’s top tier G-Guardians also run in this deck! When called, “Sacred Tree Dragon, Rain Breath Dragon” calls a card from hand to the field, giving that unit Resist and itself gaining extra Shield! Your units’ on-place abilities can be activated through this – use this to counter Dominate plays or potentially give defensive Power to your vanguard through Saul.

There’s also “Flower Princess of Dedication, Robertina”, which when placed, returns two identical normal units on your field or drop to your deck to Counter-Charge 1 and gain massive Shield! Lastly, “Bond Protector Musketeer, Antero” gets Shield when placed, with the potential to gain even more if you have one or less OR four or more rear-guards! With the strong defenses provided by these G-Guardians, you can confidently ensure a strong response with your Strides the following turn!

Other Options

Flower Princess of Compassion, Ladislava, Cherry Blossom Musketeer, Augusto, Light Elemental, Honoly and Anthurium Musketeer, Nikla

“Flower Princess of Compassion, Ladislava” is an optional Stride to go into! By discarding a card from hand, it reveals two cards with the same grade as one of your rear-guards from deck, adding one of them to hand and the other to the field! The utility that this ability provides can be massive in preparing defenses or setting up for an offensive push during your next turn! Ladislava also Stands two allies with the same name when attacking, offering some offensive benefits to a more utility-based Stride.

In the main deck, “Cherry Blossom Musketeer, Augusto” is an interesting defensive option to be considered! When called as a rear-guard or used as a guardian, it retires one or more back row allies to gain Power and Shield according to the number of rear-guards retired this way. Then, if you retired two or more cards, it sends two normal unit Musketeer cards in drop to the bottom of your deck to draw a card! While its high Shield potential and recycling of key cards may seem attractive, it’s not as useful when your back row is empty, especially after a Green Katrina – Cecilia “Яeverse” turn.

There’s also the updated “Light Elemental, Honoly” that can be played, to counter multi-attack decks by forcing them to expend more Counter-Blast for their rear-guard attacks. However, without a Musketeer name and any offensive benefits, it can be difficult to find sufficient space to fit this card in. Lastly, you could consider the resource Heal trigger “Anthurium Musketeer, Nikla” for its Soul-Charge and Counter-Charge capabilities, though the anti-aggression and Stride fodder use of Heal Guardians are usually more valuable.

Game Plan

Opening Hand

In the opening draw sequence, finding the following pieces will be ideal in having a smoother early game that transitions well into your later combos.

Maiden of Sweet Berry, and Water Lily Musketeer, Ruth

– A grade 1 ride target, preferably Sweet Berry or Ruth

Lycoris Musketeer, Saul and Peony Musketeer, Toure

– Your grade 2 ride is mostly flexible, though having the opportunity to use Saul or Toure to set up a board early would be great

White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia and Thorn Lily Musketeer, Cecilia “Яeverse”

– Given the deck’s lack of consistency tools, having your grade 3 ride on hand early is important to secure your ride progression. (Opt for original Cecilia going first; you can consider Cecilia “Яeverse” going second)
– More grade 2 Musketeers that can swarm your board on your grade 2 turn will greatly benefit your early game

Maiden of Blossom Rain and Pure-hearted Flower Maiden, Fiorenza

– Defensive pieces like Heal Guardians and Perfect Guards can be kept in hand as a precautionary measure
If you can ensure a strong early game with your Musketeers and guarantee the correct grade 3 ride for going first or second, the path to victory will definitely be clear!

Riding to Grade 1

Maiden of Sweet Berry, and Water Lily Musketeer, Ruth

If you are going first, riding into either Sweet Berry or Ruth doesn’t matter as much since you won’t be able to take advantage of your Plant tokens for rushing yet. If going second, riding Ruth would be better since it generates two Plants instead; you can opt to call Sweet Berry down to completely fill your board!

Riding to Grade 2

Lycoris Musketeer, Saul, Pansy Musketeer, Sylvia and Peony Musketeer, Toure

As mentioned, any of the Musketeers outside of Favila would be a good target. Make use of either Toure or Saul to prune your Plant tokens to find stronger Musketeer allies that can keep up the pressure of the rush! (In Saul’s case, targeting trigger units to activate their trigger effects can be impactful!)

Riding to Grade 3

Going into grade 3, your ride targets and subsequent plays can differ depending on whether you went first or second.

White Lily Musketeer, Cecilia and Maiden Lily Musketeer Captain, Virginal Cecilia

If going first: The main play to be made here is the superior Stride into Virginal Cecilia. As such, having the original Cecilia on hand to make this play is crucial. Then, you can begin the process of thinning your deck through repeated Musketeer calls! Utilize your inherited Limit Break ability to recycle Musketeer cards in drop to call out Cecilia copies, before replacing any unideal rear-guards on board with better ones through your second ability. After this, activate Virginal Cecilia’s ability to rebuild your board with empowered allies! Every Musketeer call from this ability increases your deck density with trigger units to aid in your trigger checks!

If going second: You could consider making the superior Stride play here for the deck thinning potential and double Force marker generation. Additionally, Cecilia “Яeverse” would also be usable at this point! However, the Stride into Green Katrina is a more consistent way to guarantee the Cecilia “Яeverse” combo; it would also allow you to flip up Cycloned copies to further empower your Plant token attacking columns. After this, make sure that you have the ideal pieces ready to set up for the combo sequence. Having copies of Plant token generators like Sylvia and Sweet Berry on hand would be ideal to maximize the offensive Power of the Plants and allow for more search targets from Green Katrina’s ability.

Rotting Usurp Dragon

Once Green Katrina attacks, you’ll want to call Cecilia “Яeverse” from deck to have its ability condition met, as well as another token generator to be called in a separate column with the created Plant behind it to set up the reride! (Cecilia “Яeverse” will lock both cards, and that Plant token will disappear from the field.) If you have enough Plant tokens, calling a Rotting Usurp from deck will also set up another attacker after the reride occurs. (You can retire it by resolving the Plant token generator’s ability to call the Plant over Rotting Usurp after it was called by Green Katrina).

Upon the reride occurring, Rotting Usurp calls itself back to the field for another swing. You’ll then have Cecilia “Яeverse”’s on-attack ability activate to create more attacks; if you’re lucky, you can have another Cecilia reride occur if you can find a Cecilia from the ability!

Defenses

With the constant aggression that can require many cards committed from hand, it may be hard to maintain a sizeable hand before you stabilize with your Strides, so being efficient with your board setup and guarding in the early game can make a huge difference in successfully defending against your opponent’s counterattack.

Pure-hearted Flower Maiden, Fiorenza

– Using Heal Guardians early can mitigate your opponent’s counteroffensive, so knowing when to use them will be a valuable skill.
– Since your G-Guardians gain massive Shield, use them to one-card guard attacks and save your sentinels and trigger units for other battles.

Notable Matchups

Narukami: This deck has always been annoying to deal with, thanks to the countless ways that they can bind your units away and prevent you from properly executing a combo turn. As such, having Bracing Angel Ladder on hand to prevent your allies from being affected by their interruptive tools will be impactful in the matchup. (In a smaller capacity, Favila will also be useful in protecting some of your allies.)

Megacolony: This clan can be an annoyance to deal with, since the Stride “Guilty Empress, Gredora” can completely prevent your multi-attacks from deck. It also disallows you to set up your board with Plant tokens as well! Outputting early aggression will help in preventing Megacolony from stabilizing in the game. Additionally, you could consider the use of Miroslava as an alternative win condition since its ability to Stand your allies circumvents Gredora’s restrictions.
