In today’s A Generation Past, we’ll be taking a look at the Star Gate clans, <<Nova Grappler>>, <<Dimension Police>> and <<Link Joker>>. These clans feature a lot of futuristic, high-tech mechanical designs and have very different abilities from one another which distinguish them from the others. At one point or other during the lifespan of Cardfight!! Vanguard, one of these clans has made it into the spotlight, clinching top-place finishes at major events.
First off, let’s take a look at <<Nova Grappler>>!
Nova Grappler – Strongest Beast Deity, Ethics Buster Extreme
The strongest Beast Deity has a very powerful ability indeed. If you’re running a deck that is entirely composed of Beast Deity cards (why wouldn’t you), you’ll have a very high hit rate with its effect which can be extremely devastating in the late game. Beast Deity decks also have the option of using Deadliest Beast Deity, Ethics Buster “Яeverse” to help them push the opponent into the range where Ethics Buster Extreme would be able to finish them off with a barrage of 5 attacks.
Putting just one unit to Stand with its ability per grade 1 and above “Beast Deity” triggered feels underwhelming, but we have to keep in mind that there are cards like Beast Deity, Riot Horn that can put itself to Stand when a unit in the same column as it is put to Stand, and Beast Deity, Max Beat that can put another unit to Stand when it is put to Stand. There are also cards like Beast Deity, Blank Marsh that put the pressure onto the opponent to guard your attacks as well, with a threatening ability that can potentially create another column of attack.
Dimension Police – Super Dimensional Robo, Daikaiser
One of the more interesting abilities that arose during the era of Break Rides, Super Dimensional Robo, Daikaiser presented <<Dimension Police>> players with a unique, but somewhat difficult to use ability. An average deck would normally only use about 7 to 9 grade 3 cards, resulting in a poor chance for the ability to activate.
This gave rise to an interesting deck build focused around Daikaiser, using the ability of Enigman Flow. Riding Enigman Ripple over Enigman Flow allows the player to search for Enigman Wave, guaranteeing your progress to grade 2. As such, there is no need to play too many other grade 2 or grade 1 cards apart from these 2 cards, allowing the player to maximize the number of grade 3 units in their deck. As an added threat, you can even use Commander Laurel to increase the pressure on your opponent, forcing him to deal with an additional attack if the first attack hits or getting hit even if he guards.
This build got an upgrade later with Ultimate Dimensional Robo, Great Daikaiser that can gain an additional drive check for the battle! The cost is restrictive, though, so it may be difficult to use if the deck’s balance of Dimension Robo units and non-Dimension Robo units is off.
Link Joker – Star-vader, “Omega” Glendios
Star-vader, “Omega” Glendios marked a first for Cardfight!! Vanguard. It was a powerful final-boss type card that required players to use various other Яeverse units from other clans in order to work, along with a fearsome Ultimate Break ability that is basically an alternate win condition for the player.
Alternate win conditions have never been printed as a card effect before, so there was understandably a lot of hype for Glendios. The deck build itself was also fairly convoluted, as the Яeverse units played a large role in the deck, requiring the player to play a larger number of grade 3 cards yet again. Thankfully, players had Star-vader, Worldline Dragon, a card that essentially fixes the issue of getting stuck at a grade before grade 3 as long as you have Яeverse units in your hand to use as cost.
The deck build then becomes far simpler, necessitating only key <<Link Joker>> cards be included to allow for more Яeverse units in the deck. Other key <<Link Joker>> cards for this deck (other than the Sentinel) include Star-vader, Magnet Hollow to search for more “Я” units, Taboo Star-vader, Rubidium as a defensive measure, and Star-vader, Cold Death Dragon to ensure that you can lock all 5 circles on your opponent’s field, even if they did not play a unit onto that circle.
The deck recently got an upgrade as well in the form of Death Star-vader, “Omega Loop” Glendios in Fighters Collection 2015, which has the potential to lock all of the opponent’s rear-guard circles in one fell swoop and even prevents their circles from unlocking, setting up the win for you on the very next turn.
Another memorable part of these cards is their artwork. Beast Deity, Ethics Buster is drawn by Konomu Sekiyama-sensei, while both Super Dimensional Robo, Daikaiser and Star-vader, “Omega” Glendios was drawn by Masami Obari-sensei. Both these artists are highly talented, and have provided artwork for multiple cards in Cardfight!! Vanguard, most of them featuring units with highly detailed mechanical designs in a dynamic action pose.
