A Generation Past, Part Vier
Welcome back to another A Generation Past article! It’s been awhile since the last one, what with all the content going out the last 2 months or so, but we’re back with the rest of the Dragon Empire clans!
A Generation Past, Part Ein (Shadow Paladin, Royal Paladin, Oracle Think Tank)
A Generation Past, Part Zwei (Angel Feather, Genesis, Gold Paladin)
A Generation Past, Part Drei (Kagero, Narukami)
≪Tachikaze≫, ≪Murakumo≫ and ≪Nubatama≫ play very differently from their other Dragon Empire compatriots. While ≪Kagero≫ and ≪Narukami≫ are focused on powerful attackers and retiring the opponent’s rear-guards, these clans have more varied styles of play that are often less direct, but still formidable.
Tachikaze: Destruction Dragon, Dark Rex
This card brought ≪Tachikaze≫ into the spotlight, and is one of the more unique cards in Cardfight!! Vanguard. Born in the era where 10000 power vanguards were still commonplace, Dark Rex was a formidable addition to the ≪Tachikaze≫ card pool that let it challenge the strongest of decks in its era. Riding a card from the bind zone is still one of the rarer type of abilities, and because it is considered a ride, it can trigger Ancient Dragon, Spinodriver’s Break Ride ability. The overall cost is rather hefty (as you’ll need to retire basically your entire field) but this gambit can potentially pay off in a win.
Murakumo: Fantasy Petal Storm, Shirayuki
The first thing that attracted me to this card is, of course, the adorable (?), if slightly spooky, artwork. Reducing the opponent’s attack power wasn’t a new concept then; previously in Awakening of Twin Blades, ≪Murakumo≫ received Covert Demonic Dragon, Mandala Lord, which could reduce the opponent’s power by 10000. Subsequently, ≪Dimension Police≫ and ≪Shadow Paladin≫ also got similar effects, but Shirayuki and Mandala Lord specifically reduced the opponent’s power when they were attacking, making attacks far easier to guard against.
In the current game environment, an effect like that would be pretty practical still, considering the fact that G units attack for around 26000 power. Reducing its power by 20000 would basically mean you’re barely expending cards to guard, plus you can save your Sentinels for later.
Nubatama: Stealth Dragon, Voidmaster
Known affectionately to some of my friends and I as “Big Hug”, Stealth Dragon, Voidmaster was released in Descent of the King of Knights, the very first booster pack for Cardfight!! Vanguard. It was a card that gave a lot of flavour to the ≪Nubatama≫ clan, even though it was one of only 4 cards available then. Mechanics that can discard cards from the opponent’s hand are, of course, extremely powerful, and the world waited with bated breath to see how the clan would grow.
Voidmaster is basically the prototype of the clan, which now involves binding the opponent’s hand cards and rear-guards. While not as directly devastating as forcing the opponent to discard cards outright, restricting the number of cards a player can guard with can be a pretty scary tactic, especially if you’re using the Rikudo Stealth Dragon, Tsukumorakan & Stealth Dragon, Shiranui combo!
And that’s it for the Dragon Empire clans! We’ll be moving to the Dark Zone clans next time, so do stay tuned for more trips down memory lane in the future!
